Quilt Goals with Fat Quarter Shop

As a Quilter one of the most exciting things you can hear from a friend is “Can you show me how to make a quilt?”  All the emotions start running as you know that the adventure ahead for your friend is going to be amazing and hopefully the start of their own loved and long quilting journey.

I have been invited by Fat Quarter Shop to participate in the Quilt Goals 2023 Challenge and my Goal was to help a friend with Quilting for the first time.  I thought that it might be helpful to share with you, my top 5 Tips for Teaching a friend to Quilt.

1. Keep is Simple

For someone starting out in quilting – choose a pattern that is simple in design but big on impact.  Repeated blocks work well as you can focus on teaching them the importance of a 1/4in seam allowance and how to sew one block – which they can then gain confidence in sewing by repeating and seeing their skills grow as they make the blocks.  They will love seeing their stack of blocks grow and it spurs their enjoyment of quilting.

This design is my Liberty Belle Quilt and it uses a repeated block pattern to achieve this stunning quilt.  How amazing are the colours from Melody Millers Curio Collection for Ruby Star Society.

Get the Liberty Belle Quilt pattern here

2. Colour Confidence

This takes time for quilters to develop and will grow and change over time.  Start out using collection. These already have colour combos worked out and work really well together. This means at this early stage for a new quilter they can work on their skills of sewing rather than being worried or unsure of what colours work well together or if it will turn out ok.  Fabric collections take out the guesswork.

3. Get the right Equipment

Setting up the sewing machine with a 1/4in foot will be such a game changer.  Often when people are new to quilting, they take the machine straight out of the box or dust it off (a gift from a great Aunt) and start quilting and soon run into trouble when all the points and blocks don’t line up.  While this isn’t about perfection – it is about having the machine “Quilt ready” with the correct foot for quilting.

4. Borders – make or break!

Not all quilts have borders but when they do this can be the make or break of how a quilt looks.  Make sure you correctly teach your friend to measure and then cut the Border strips to fit the quilt top measurements.  Just sewing border strips to the quilt top, then cutting off the excess can result in flared or buckled quilts once quilted.  By doing it this way you can be adding length to the quilt top and this is why the borders then flair out.  It is important to measure and cut each border strip to size.  You can watch here to see how to do this.

5. Binding is fun!

I know it can often be that part that many quilters aren’t that over the moon about but I wanted to share a couple of my favourite ways to Bind so that you can easily love binding yourself and show your friend how it can be relaxing and that last final touch to a quilt.

Little Ruby Quilt Along - Finish - Fat Quarter Shop

Sharing with you today my Little Ruby Quilt Along Quilt - all finished.  I am so thrilled with how this quilt all came together and this beautiful design by Camille Roskelley for Fat Quarter Shop.

These Little Ruby fabrics are just ever so sweet and my quilt has been made with a special new arrival in mind.  Making the Star Blocks was so easy with the Creative Grid Rulers and came together really quickly.  You can find the pattern to make this quilt for yourself here.

I sent this quilt to professionally Long Arm Quilted by Carol Brady of The Quilting Cottage.  I just love the floral pattern we chose that looks very similar to the flowers in the prints.

For my backing for this quilt, I have made it completely reversible by using blocks I had made from my Spell it with Moda Quilt.  This quilt has gone to a very special new little lady indeed.  I love my quilts to have owners when I make them - it makes the process so much more rewarding.

I hope you have enjoyed this Little Ruby Quilt Along - I have just loved making this quilt.  You can check out the hash tag #littlerubyquiltalong for lots of beautiful inspiration from all the other makers who joined in.

Pretty Playtime Quilts - Quilt Along

It is no secret that Strawberry Biscuit by Elea Lutz is one of my favourite fabric ranges and so when she and Kimberley from the Fat Quarter Shop team up to produce this wonderful book - well - pretty amazing sums it up.

This book features absolutely adorable designs for you to make and sew.  The instructions are really easy to follow to make these designs.  I am here today to share the block I made for the Pretty Playtime Quilts Quilt - Along.

I made the Cottage block and with clear instructions it was easy and quick to make.

I was ever so lucky to have travelled all the way to Salt Lake City to Quilt Market.  While I was there I was able to get Elea to sign my copy of the book - this I will treasure.

The book is available HERE and I have used the upcoming Flower Sugar Sweet Carnival range by Lecien (due out in October) to make my block with.

You can check out all the blocks made by all the other talented bloggers here

Little Ruby Quilt Along - Fat Quarter Shop - Part 2

Back today with Part 2 in the Little Ruby Quilt Along together with Fat Quarter Shop.  You will find all the details for the start of the quilt along in my first post here.  It has all the links for the pattern and all you need to get started as there is still plenty of time to join in.

I have enjoyed cutting out and starting to put my star blocks together.  This pattern by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Bossoms is just a beauty and I have to say that the Creative Grid rulers have been fabulous and easy to use.

You can check out the Video Tutorial here.

I haven't used the Creative Grid rulers and I have to say that these worked a treat.  With the circle indents in them cutting out the triangles quickly was a breeze.  It also saved lots of turning around of the ruler as you go so there was a lot less movement in my strips as I went.

These star blocks have been quick and fun to sew and make.  The key being to pin and gently press your Triangles as you go.

Hope you are enjoying making your own Little Ruby Quilt.

AGF Stitched Event - Locket Quilt

One of my favourite ranges that I fell in love with at Fall Market was Paperie by Amy Sinibaldi for Art Gallery Fabrics.  This is Amy's first range and - wow - it is ever so sweet and just the perfect assortment of fabrics.  The colours are delicate and bold and each print complements perfectly.

Being invited to work on the latest AGF Stitched Event together with Fat Quarter Shop has been great fun.  The latest Quilt design - Locket Quilt is a large scale block design that works so well with this range.  The Locket Quilt pattern (available free) can be found here.  Along with a Video Tutorial  - here.

These blocks came together quickly and I decided that I would turn my Locket Quilt Blocks into a Table Runner.  The colours in the prints allow the pattern to stand out and have sewn up well in a row which slightly differs to the pattern's "on point" block formation.

I quilted around the shapes using tramlines in matching Aurifil Thread colours.

You can find the Quilt Kit to make this Locket Quilt and Backing Set all over at Fat Quarter Shop.

Here is the list of all the other participating Bloggers for you to check out the Locket Quilts and projects they have made.

The Farmers Wife 1930's Quilt-A-Long - #46 Jewel

Welcome to The Farmers Wife 1930's Quilt -A-Long.  I am sharing my tips and techniques to make block #46 Jewel with you all.  I was thrilled to be asked by Angie of GnomeAngel to participate an an official blogger together with Fat Quarter Shop.

It took me a long time to settle on which fabrics I would use.  I brought out a few collections like my Cotton and Steel, 1930's Reproductions and a few others but finally settled on some fabrics from my Liberty of London collection inspired by the colours of pink, yellow and red.

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING
I love English Paper Piecing (EPP), I love the time taken to hand sew each stitch and how perfectly imperfect each stitch is.  I find it relaxing as well as a great way to take my sewing with me out and about on long car trips, waiting for my girls when they are at activities or just as a way to spend some time winding down.

I think that if you are going to spend time hand sewing then make sure you have the right tools and equipment to make the process easier and enjoyable.  These are MY favourite Notions and Tools for any EPP project.

(adds a 1/4in seam allowance around shapes)
in what ever shape or pattern you are using

Thread Basting versus Glue Basting - I really think this is just personal preference.  For this block I have chosen to Glue Baste.

Invest in good tools and equipment, for example you don't want to have inferior thread snap, break or shred for all the time you spend hand sewing and using needles that glide through your fabric will be much easier.

#46 Jewel

FREEZER PAPER EPP METHOD - For this block I am using Freezer Paper to make my Templates.  You can of course use regular paper to print out your pattern and use but I hope to show you a technique you may have not seen before for English Paper Piecing.  This method makes it easy to keep pieces for each fabric together and stops the paper from moving about while you are basting.  Also because you will be dealing with Mirror Image pieces in this block it makes for easy cutting out without having to worry about which pieces to mirror on the fabric and getting muddled up.

Step 1 - This block does not use common pre-cut paper shapes or templates such as hexagons, diamonds or pentagons like in many English Paper Piecing projects so you will need to make your own Paper Shapes for this block.  I use Reynolds Freezer Paper and after printing off the Completed Block Template from the CD, trace the entire block carefully onto the paper side of the Freezer Paper using a sharp lead pencil and ruler.
Step 2 - Take your chosen fabrics for each of the pieces and number the pieces on the Freezer Paper pattern according to co-ordinating fabric number - in this block I numbered my Pink fabric 1, Floral fabric 2 and Yellow fabric 3.  Carefully cut out the Freezer Paper pattern pieces as accurately as possible to make your template shapes for your block.

Step 3 - Place the shiny side of the Freezer Paper to the wrong side of the fabric, leaving enough space around each piece to later cut out a 1/4in seam allowance.  Press the shapes to the back of the Freezer Paper and they "stay" in place on the back of the fabric without moving.  Cut out each of the shapes using your Rotating Cutting Mat and Rotary Cutter with a 1/4in seam allowance ready for Glue Basting.

Step 4 - Glue Baste your shape using your Glue Pen.  Do not trim any "tails" as you move these out of the way of your paper pieces as you sew.

Step 5 - To sew your pieces together place them with points/corners matching and right sides facing.  Put a Binding Clip at the opposite end to hold the points. Whip Stitch towards your binding clip keeping your stitches just through the fold of the fabric and not lower in the paper (otherwise you will not be able to remove these later).  Try to keep your stitches nice and even so that they are less noticeable.

Step 6 - Continue to English Paper Piece all the pieces together as shown in the pattern to make the block.  Binding clips are also fabulous to help you meet the intersections with the pieces so that everything lines up.

Step 7 - Once you have sewn all the pieces together you can carefully remove the papers by lifting the seam allowance from the papers and peeling the Freezer Paper off the back of the fabric. Press the seam allowances back into position to sit flat and Press out, the outside seam allowance to make your block to correct unfinished size.

I hope this Freezer Paper technique shows you how easy it is to sew with Mirror Image Pieces in your blocks.  Hand sewing your blocks does take time so enjoy it and the more you do the better and more confidant you will become with this technique.
