"Make" a Love Triangle Quilt

Have you seen the amazing work by Kristy at Quiet Play - I am sure that you have as she is not only a Pattern Designer who specialises in Foundation Paper Piecing but also a Rainbow lover, Online Quilting teacher and a Fabric Designer.

Make is Kristy's 4th Fabric collection for Riley Blake and it is full of all the amazing rainbow yumminess you have come to expect from Kristy.  This collection features all your favourite sewing and quilting notions think Sewing machines, seam rippers, scissors as well as fabrics featuring sewing and quilting words and other notions all showcased in rainbow colour order. It's made up of 24 prints celebrating those beloved tools of our trade.

I was invited by Kristy to be part of the Make Blog Tour and be a part of working with this collection to showcase and to give you some inspiration for how you might like to use this collection which is now arriving in stores.

As this collection is all about the sewing and Quilting notions it seemed very appropriate to make a Love Triangle Mini Quilt that I can hang in my sewing studio.

I decided to use the "Snip Snip" print in Black for all the shadowing on my lettering.  This design uses EQ Triangles and is such a loved design of mine.  Paired with the 'Snip Snip' I used the more Solid style fabrics to create this fun and vibrant colour palette.  For the Background fabric I used "Maker" in White.

This Love Triangle Quilt was so fun to make and I love how quickly this design works up and packs such a much.  Perfect for Sewing spaces, Quilting Studios or even to make for Mini Quilt swaps or for your sewing/quilty friend then you will love making this design and with such beautiful fabrics you will want to be adding "Maker" to your next fabric purchase.

And how perfect is Kristy's "Rainbow Stripe" in Black.  I love how this print is so great for Binding and how well it ties together in the colours from this collection.  I mean you can never have enough stripes in your fabric stash let alone Rainbow Stripes, am I right! And of course I couldn't help but add one of my LOVE Woven Labels for the perfect finishing touch.

Make is now available in stores - check out your Local Quilt store and make sure you add some to your stash.

Equilateral Triangles - My Best Tips and Tricks

I have a real love for designing Equilateral Triangle Quilt patterns – some of my popular designs such as my End Game Quilt and Love Triangle Quilt use these EQ Triangles as the basis for the design.

I understand that these can often feel intimidating or just maybe a little bit tricky - cut I am here to share with you some of my best Tips and Tricks so that you can tackle Equilateral Triangle's with ease - and see that they really aren't that tricky.

You have seen all the Equilateral Triangles all over the Internet and Pinterest and wondered how do makers achieve all those perfect points? You have tried to put some Equilateral Triangles together but none of your points meet and it doesn’t come together how you imagined!

I have taught many Workshops on Tacking Equilateral Triangles, so I am here today to share with you some of my best tips for sewing with Equilateral Triangles to get perfect points every time.

My top tips for Perfect points.

1. Pressing
Use a Starch Spray (I love Best Press) to help starch all your fabrics before you press them all.  This will help flatten your fabrics and make your fabric “feel” nice and firm to cut.  You will also notice how this helps the bias in the EQ Triangles stay as firm as possible for when it comes to sewing your Equilateral triangles.

2. Cutting
It’s best to make sure that you start on the right track. Before you begin to cut you will want to ensure your Templates are accurate.

Begin cutting our your project with a nice sharp blade in your Rotary cutter and take your time.  Accuracy in cutting will help at the next step of sewing.  Rushed cutting can snowball and turn into pieces that don’t align as you sew so your patience will be rewarded.

3. Not all Rulers are created Equal
Ruler – There are many rulers on the market and again this is important to test any ruler size you have against any paper Template provided. Always double check alongside the given paper template in the pattern (check the size scale – 1in square).

Also, if your ruler is “Top Trimmed” - meaning it has flat points – cut these off when cutting out your pieces.  These will help you line up your seam allowance.

4. Sewing
When it comes to sewing your EQ triangles together - match your points at the seam intersection (not along the raw edge of the fabrics). Place a pin where the seam meets at 1/4in to hold these points together. I like to put my pin through on a diagonal to hold down seam allowances from either side.

Sew the seam through where the points intersect. You may need to sew slightly scanter or wider at this point, so your stitch runs exactly through this point.

With these helpful tips you will find it easy to tackle Equilateral Triangles.

Love Triangle Quilt Along Week 4

I can't believe we are getting so close to the end of the Love Triangle Along.  I have been so inspired by all the different and personal stories behind your choices for which fabrics you went with and how so many of these Quilts have an owner eagerly awaiting its finish.

While Equilateral Triangles can be quite tricky when you first start, I hope that after the tips I have given you and a bit of practice you are well and truly feeling more confidant and seeing improvement and satisfaction at your points lining up.

This week we are working on finishing up your last few rows - that is Rows 9-12 as well as sewing all the rows together (if you haven't done so already).  Our aim by the end of this week is to have a completed Quilt Top.

Love Triangle Quilt Along Week 2

What an amazing start we have gotten off to with the Love Triangle Quilt Along - it is so exciting to see so many fabric pulls and cut out triangles showing up already.  I am seriously in love with lots of these that they make me want to make another one - or ten!  Have you checked out the #lovetrianglequilt and #lovetriangleqal hashtags?

It's certainly not too late at all to join in the fun at all.

You can get all the details for the Love Triangle Quilt Along here

I know how excited everyone is to have cut out your fabrics and are now ready to get started on sewing together all your Triangles. This week we are aiming to sew together the first 4 rows of your Love Triangle Quilt.

So if you have never sewn triangles before or even just want a refresher here are some of my best tips to succeed at getting nice pointy points when you are sewing your triangles and rows together.

Pins Matter
When it comes to pinning - yes I really do believe that the type of Pins you use matter and can make a big difference to your sewing.  I have taught many students over the years and a simple way to make a big difference in how you pin, is to use good quality, fine pins designed for Patchwork.  Big, bulky, thick pins will make things harder to line up - they disturb the fabric more when pinned through your fabrics and sometimes they can snag your fabric if they are rusted or have burs along them.

Fine Pins for Patchwork are a worthwhile notion to have in your Quilting Toolbox - I like to use Clover Fine Patchwork Pins (as pictured below and this isn't a sponsored add - just my personal opinion).  They are sharp, nice and fine and are perfect for use when quilting.

Pin Placement Tip
When it comes to pinning your rows together - one of the best tips I can give you is shown in the Steps below. It's all about lining up, checking and then the placement of your pins.

Step 1 - Once your rows are sewn together (as per the pattern instructions), to line up the points as perfectly as possible - match the rows right sides together. Then slightly open up along the raw edges of where your sewn seam line will run and match the Points here at 1/4in. Don't just assume you have everything magically perfect to sew along the 1/4in raw edge seam line.  Take the time to match each triangle tip.

Step 2 - Place a pin on an angle at the 1/4in mark where you will sew your seam.

Step 3 - Pin all the triangle points, matching carefully and then pinning along the row.  Sew the seam ENSURING to take out your pins just before you get to them. This is where if you have nice Fine pins the aligned fabrics are not disturbed by shifting bulky pins.
(NEVER sew over Pins!)

Step 4 - Stand back and admire your perfect alignment of your Triangle points.

Week 1 - Selecting your Fabric
This weeks task is all about selecting and choosing the fabric you would like to make your Quilt from. Post a pic to Instagram, using the above hash tags of your fabric pull or quilt planning to show us what you will be making your Love Triangle Quilt from and to be in the running for this weeks prizes. (NOTE - do not post full colouring pages PLEASE!)

Fabric pull by @novaquilts

This is where the sky is the limit - whether you choose Solids or Prints this quilt works.  You can grab fabrics from your stash or use a collection.

While I have made my original Love Triangle Quilt from Tula Solids (fabric colours used are listed in the pattern) I also have made one using a Black Confetti Dash and White Background with 80's inspired Neon Colours.  This was made all out of print style fabrics.  I also made a Mini Version using Carolyn Freidlander fabrics from her Collection CF and Jetty collections.

If you are looking for inspiration for fabrics then head to the #lovetrianglequilt hash tag.  There you will see lots of different fabrics that have been used so far to make End Game Quilts.

Solids
Solids work so well for this Quilt and the choices of different Fabric Company Solids is huge.  I have included in the pattern the names of the Tula Pink Solids I used but you can pick any colour scheme you like for this.  One way to do this is head over to Pinterest and search Colour Palettes - this gives you lots of boards with a selection of colours already that co-ordinate and work well together.  From here you can pick and choose solids for any colour palette you like.

Prints
For this quilt - multi directional prints work best and are easiest - You can use small scale prints that really give the cohesive look to how many triangles read as one large triangle. Or large scale prints like big florals are also fabulous as these really stand out due to the size of the Triangles.

Directional Prints - you can certainly use directional prints - HOWEVER be aware that as you cut the Triangles along your width of fabric (WOF) that one will be right side up and the other upside down as you cut along the fabric due to the triangle shape.  So if you are wanting to match directional fabrics then you will need to allow for extra fabric when you purchase.

Scrappy
This design also works perfectly to pull fabrics from your stash if you want to go with a scrappy vibe.  Check out these amazing two examples of how Scrappy might be just the perfect look you are after for your Love Triangle Quilt.

Colouring In Page
Included in the pattern is a Colouring Page - simply print out or copy this page from your pattern and grab your colouring in pencils.  This is designed to help you plan out and play with the colours and fabrics until you have a colour palette you are happy with.

Other tools that may be helpful in planning out your colour palette might be colour cards of swatch samples.

Cutting your Fabrics

Now that you have chosen your fabrics, this week is also all about cutting into them.  So let's have a chat about anything you need to take into consideration before chopping them up.

1 - ENSURE your Pattern Template is printed out at the Correct size - if you are using the pattern Template page provided in the Pattern - you MUST make sure this is printed at 100% on your Printer.  There is a 1in Test Square - measure it and make sure it is 1in - if it is not you need to check the settings on your Printer.  Do NOT print out at "Fit to Page" or "Scale to fit" - it must be printed out at 100% to make sure your Triangle measures 3in, 6in or 8.5in.  If you are using my Template Sets - this does not apply to you and if you are using a Top Trimmed or other Equilateral Triangle it is a good idea to lay this onto top to check the sizing.

2 - I highly suggest you cut a few test Triangles first from some scrap fabric to ensure you have the correct sizing for you Equilateral Triangles.  As mentioned in the pattern - not all Equilateral Triangles have the same measurement markings on the.  Some are "Top Trimmed" some are not.  So unless you are using my Template set - PLEASE make and sew a few test Triangles first with the correct seam allowance to ensure you have the correct sizing before you cut into your yardage.  It is better to make sure the width of the Triangles is correct before cutting them all.

3 - Directional Fabrics - directional fabric are not accounted for in the fabric requirements.  So if you are choosing a directional fabric you may need to consider sourcing more fabric to account for this if you want your fabric to run directionally.

Cutting Tags
Included in your pattern are Cutting Tags.  These are designed to assist you keep everything all sorted once you decide which fabrics will be which and then to make sure you cut the correct number as you work.

Prizes
This week we have 2 prizes up for grabs from our Sponsors

Sew Mondo have offered up a $75 Gift Certificate for one winner

So to be eligible for this weeks prizes - make sure to post your pics of your Fabric Pull or Fabric Planning on Instagram to - #lovetrianglequilt, #lovetriangleqal and #tiedwitharibbonpatterns.
