Little Red Riding Hood Custom Quilt

It is such a joy being commissioned to make a Custom Quilt for a new baby on the way.  I love the excitement surrounding the new arrival and how all the details - even down to the quilt all matter so much for this precious impending arrival.

This Custom Order Quilt is no exception.  Little Red Riding Hood was the theme and with fabrics chosen I set about sewing.

Fabric range is Little Red Riding Hood by Tasha Noel for Riley Blake Fabrics with other fabrics also from my stash.

Custom Order Quilt complete

Finishing up the year with a custom Quilt seems just right.  It was gifted to the clients dear friend for a special birthday gift. The Coral and Aqua fabrics have all come from my stash.

And how could I go past this binding - "A Day in the Country" - do amazing stripes - always perfect for binding.

In-between finishing up orders, working on publication and media commissions and sewing Santa Sacks I have been working on two projects that I had started earlier this year.

I have been wanting to get back to my crochet Granny Square Bobble Blanket for ages and having finished up other projects I was working on (namely Green Tea and Sweet Beans) I have put it at the top of my list and I now have some nice little piles of Granny Squares.  Now to just sew in the ends before it all becomes too much at the end.  I prefer to sew in the ends as I go - how about you?

Also back to working on my Tula Pink Hexes - I decided to turn these Parisville Kits into Grandmothers Flower Gardens. Look I am not going to kid myself - English Paper Piecing takes time so this make take another whole year to complete the design I have in mind.  I love English Paper Piecing as I take it along with me for the times I have to wait - like while the girls have Swimming Squad, or waiting at doctors appointments or for when we travel long distances in the car.

70 Grandmothers Flower Garden Hexes all finished

In the kits also came with the Aurifil thread - both perfectly matched colours for basting and sewing together - #4060 (Silver Moon) and #4660 (Pink Taffy)  The 50wt is just perfect for sewing them together.

Custom Order Quilt and some sewing and crocheting for fun!

I love making Custom Order quilts - I love that someone entrusts me enough to make such a handmade treasure for someone special in their life.  This beauty is no exception.  After getting an idea of what the client is after in regard to colours and design I work up a design plan as to quilts that fit the brief and would work well for the purpose the quilt will be intended for.  I was given a lot of freedom and trust by this client whom will be gifting this to one very dear friend.

The colour brief was Corals and Aquas with white and then we selected this design to showcase the best of these fabrics which were from my stash.  It is very fresh and modern just as asked for.

And BIG - big enough to be used on a queen size bed!

In between some making this custom quilt I have been busily revamping my Logo and am in the process of working on a new website (stay tuned) and all new Pattern covers.  This is my new Logo - it is a revamp of my older one as through the process of looking at changing it I really did discover that I still loved it and it still represents what I am but I thought it could just do with a few new tweaks.

And now that I have finished my Green Tea and Sweet Beans Quilt - I have been able to get my head around starting something new.  So why not Gypsy Wife by Jen Kingwell.  This time I have decided to make it from Liberty fabrics in shades of Blue, Aqua, Pink and Reds.  These are the fabrics I have pulled from my
Liberty stash which I am going to team with Linen fabrics.

Custom Order Baby Girl Triangles Quilt

A custom order quilt for a new baby due to arrive very soon.  In fact by the time that the quilt was ready the little one had made an early arrival.

This quilt features Kona Cottons in Ash, White, Coral and Peach.  Although hard to pic out from the pic there is also a beautiful Andover Chambray in Chalice.  It has stunning threads of metallic silver through this fabric which I got from Hawthorne Threads.

I used my favourite Aurifil thread - #2024 in 50wt to piece it and then chose to quilt the lines of the triangles using #2405 - Oyster also in 50wt.  It has a slight pink/peach hue and worked well over all the fabrics.

Enjoy baby girl!

Diary of a Custom Order Quilt - Part 2

It is always hard to part with a quilt.

But knowing it is going to a home to be treasured and loved is all I need.

This quilt was commissioned by Indi at Kid Independent. She has written up a lovely feature of how this quilt all came together over at her website. Thanks for this feature Indi and your kind words on the quilt I made for your special arrival.

Rainbow Fizz Quilt Set all complete.

The custom order Rainbow Fizz Quilt/Playmat is all finished and has been delivered to its new home.

Lots of beautiful Kona Solids set against the white give the quilt a fresh and colourful look.

Playing with my new Macro Lens on my camera means I can now get some real close up shots which even show the weft and warp threads within the fabric.

The binding choice was easy - I knew it was going to need a stripe and when the backing fabric with the black swirls was chosen by the client it was hard to go past the black and white stripe for the binding.

A matching cushion was also ordered to go in the Nursery for this new impending arrival.

Rainbow Fizz custom order sewing

It is always exciting sewing up a quilt for a little baby soon to arrive.  This custom order was for a Rainbow Fizz.

Laying out and choosing all the shades of Kona to make the quilt a nice square quilt/play mat meant playing with lots of colours and shades to get the rainbow effect across the quilt just right.

Quilt top all ready now to be pinned, sandwiched and machine quilted.

Quieter Days - well somewhat!

Although it was a week ago Perth Upmarket was a fabulous day.  I thought I was going to have a quiet(er) week after the day for a little R & R but have been blown away by the wonderful and continuing support from many of my customers and followers.

It was great to meet lots of new people and I love it when those faces I know drop by to see how the day is going and what is new at Tied with a Ribbon.

With some extra time last week I have been finishing some quilts for new impending arrivals - none which I can show you yet as I know those who recieve them read my posts from time to time and will have to keep a lid on them just yet but here is the Jewel Owl quilt I finished for a custom order.

It was very hard to part with this quilt - as you know it fitted in well with the colour theme in my own sewing room and would have loved to add it to my collection but I know it has gone to a home where it will be treasured and loved.

Here are some other projects on the go at the moment - you all know how much I love ribbons - well when I was given full creative licence to create some cushions and a bedside table runner recently I could not have been more excited - quite often I find it better to work with a brief and knowing exactly what the end result was to look like but being trusted to make creations with a colour scheme as a guide and the rest being left up to me was a little nerve racking.  Here is a sneak peak - cant wait for the reveal!!!

Holiday Crafting

During the school holidays I have a bunch of regular little young ladies who love to learn to sew, craft, cut, stick and embellish.  I love how enthusiastic they are at taking in these skills and to watch them engage together in a creative way.  These are some of the lovely creations that they made these holidays.

With so much kids craft going on their has been little time for this big girl to do much of her own sewing at all.  There has been no more progress at this stage on any more Scrappy Sew Along blocks - I am itching to get back to this.

I have been making lots of Custom orders though - I was asked if I made Tea Cosies.  I have never been a Tea drinker - Coffee through and through for me!  But the call for a manly Tea Cosy was made and here is what I came up with.

What do you think - "Manly" enough with a side of Retro???
