Love Triangle Quilt Along - Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of the Love Triangle Quilt Along.  I am really excited you have decided to join in and make your very own Love Triangle Quilt.  This Quilt Along is designed to be casual and relaxed so that you can have heaps of fun, meet new quilty friends and be inspired by all the #lovetrianglequilt that will be made during the Quilt Along.  There are prizes up for grabs each week from some amazing Sponsors and I will be here to give tips, tricks or helpful details for you to successfully finish your Love Triangle Quilt.

Week 1 - Selecting your Fabric

This weeks task is all about selecting and choosing the fabric you would like to make your Quilt from. Post a pic to Instagram, using the above hash tags of your fabric pull or quilt planning to show us what you will be making your Love Triangle Quilt from and to be in the running for this weeks prizes. (NOTE - do not post full colouring pages PLEASE!)

This is where the sky is the limit - whether you choose Solids or Prints this quilt works.  You can grab fabrics from your stash or use a collection.  

While I have made my original Love Triangle Quilt from Tula Solids (fabric colours used are listed in the pattern) I also have made one using a Black Confetti Dash and White Background with 80's inspired Neon Colours.  This was made all out of print style fabrics.  I also made a Mini Version using Carolyn Freidlander fabrics from her Collection CF and Jetty collections. 

If you are looking for inspiration for fabrics then head to the #lovetrianglequilt hash tag.  There you will see lots of different fabrics that have been used so far to make End Game Quilts.

Solids

Solids work so well for this Quilt and the choices of different Fabric Company Solids is huge.  I have included in the pattern the names of the Tula Pink Solids I used but you can pick any colour scheme you like for this.  One way to do this is head over to Pinterest and search Colour Palettes - this gives you lots of boards with a selection of colours already that co-ordinate and work well together.  From here you can pick and choose solids for any colour palette you like.

Prints

For this quilt - multi directional prints work best and are easiest - You can use small scale prints that really give the cohesive look to how many triangles read as one large triangle. Or large scale prints like big florals are also fabulous as these really stand out due to the size of the Triangles.

Directional Prints - you can certainly use directional prints - HOWEVER be aware that as you cut the Triangles along your width of fabric (WOF) that one will be right side up and the other upside down as you cut along the fabric due to the triangle shape.  So if you are wanting to match directional fabrics then you will need to allow for extra fabric when you purchase. 

Scrappy

This design also works perfectly to pull fabrics from your stash if you want to go with a scrappy vibe.  Check out these amazing two examples of how Scrappy might be just the perfect look you are after for your Love Triangle Quilt.

Colouring In Page

Included in the pattern is a Colouring Page - simply print out or copy this page from your pattern and grab your colouring in pencils.  This is designed to help you plan out and play with the colours and fabrics until you have a colour palette you are happy with.  

Other tools that may be helpful in planning out your colour palette might be colour cards of swatch samples.

Cutting your Fabrics

Now that you have chosen your fabrics, this week is also all about cutting into them.  So let's have a chat about anything you need to take into consideration before chopping them up.

1 - ENSURE your Pattern Template is printed out at the Correct size - if you are using the pattern Template page provided in the Pattern - you MUST make sure this is printed at 100% on your Printer.  There is a 1in Test Square - measure it and make sure it is 1in - if it is not you need to check the settings on your Printer.  Do NOT print out at "Fit to Page" or "Scale to fit" - it must be printed out at 100% to make sure your Triangle measures 3in, 6in or 8.5in.  If you are using my Template Sets - this does not apply to you and if you are using a Top Trimmed or other Equilateral Triangle it is a good idea to lay this onto top to check the sizing.

2 - I highly suggest you cut a few test Triangles first from some scrap fabric to ensure you have the correct sizing for you Equilateral Triangles.  As mentioned in the pattern - not all Equilateral Triangles have the same measurement markings on the.  Some are "Top Trimmed" some are not.  So unless you are using my Template set - PLEASE make and sew a few test Triangles first with the correct seam allowance to ensure you have the correct sizing before you cut into your yardage.  It is better to make sure the width of the Triangles is correct before cutting them all.

3 - Directional Fabrics - directional fabric are not accounted for in the fabric requirements.  So if you are choosing a directional fabric you may need to consider sourcing more fabric to account for this if you want your fabric to run directionally.  

Cutting Tags 

Included in your pattern are Cutting Tags.  These are designed to assist you keep everything all sorted once you decide which fabrics will be which and then to make sure you cut the correct number as you work.

Love Triangle Quilt Along - Getting Ready

 

I am so excited to finally release the Love Triangle Quilt Pattern.  This design is fun, bold and the 3D effect of the lettering makes for a Modern quilt design. I know that you guys are going to love making your very own version of this Quilt. 

Starting September 1st we will be kicking off the #lovetriangleqal

The Love Triangle Quilt Pattern comes in three sizes - the Mini Quilt at 30.5in x 30.5in (77.5cm x 77.5cm), the Lap Quilt at 66.5in x 66.5in (169cm x 169cm) and the Queen Quilt at 96.5in x 96.5in (245cm x 245cm).  Included in the pattern is a Colouring Page to help you work out your colour placement, as well as Cutting Tags to keep track of your fabrics as you cut them.

You will also need an Equilateral Triangle Ruler.  Listed in the Pattern under the NOTES section are lots of details as to what type of ruler works well for this quilt to ensure accuracy.  

To go with this Quilt Pattern I have made Equilateral Triangle Acrylic Templates that go with each size for the Mini Quilt, Lap Quilt and Queen Quilt Sizes  These Templates will ensure that your Love Triangle  Quilt measures the correct size for your blocks.

Love Triangle Quilt Pattern release!

I know you are not supposed to have favourites but I can't help it.  This is the most favourite Quilt Pattern I have designed to date! I am so excited to introduce the Love Triangle Quilt. Originally published in Love Patchwork and Quilting (Issue 83) the Love Triangle Quilt is now available as a stand alone Pattern.

The inspiration for this Quilt came after seeing some Graffiti in a Laneway in Melbourne City.  I saw a letter 'S' on the wall and it instantly took my interest for how I could make lettering work in a Quilt in a new and inspired way.  Once I looked at the letter for a while I realised that it could work so well made up of Equilateral Triangles.  Several months later back in my Studio I was sitting down with some grid paper and pencils determined to work this idea up into a Quilt.  I settled on the word LOVE after playing with lots of words because it is universal and it just had me so inspired.  Working up several different styles and with different layouts once I was happy I set about creating the design in fabric.

Love Triangle Quilt is modern, bold and a graphic style quilt made up of Equilateral Triangles.  The pattern includes 3 sizes - Mini (30.5in x 30.5in - 77.5cm x 77.5cm), Lap (66.5in x 66.5in - 169cm x 169cm) and Queen (96.5in x 96.5in - 245cm x 245cm). The pattern also contains a Colouring Page, Cutting Tags to keep track of your cut colours and a Paper Template to measure any existing Template you may have or to use on its own.

Whether you choose to make this design out of Solids or Prints this works so well with either.  

This Love Triangle (original) Quilt was made out of Tula Pink Solids - I just love the saturation and depth of colour that these Free Spirit Solids have.  This design works up best using dark and lighter shades to create the 3D effect.

A big thank you to Carol at The Quilting Cottage for her stellar Custom Quilting of this Quilt.  IT really has made this design pop and was just what I wanted for this Quilt.

And because I am always a sucker to design and make Mini Quilts, I could not help but work up the Tula Pink Solids to show just how cute the design looks as a Mini Quilt.

And to make the process of cutting out far more accurate as well as much quicker, I have Acrylic Templates available for all the Quilt sizes included in the pattern here.

For many years I have been dreaming that one of my patterns would be turned into a T-shirt design.  Well that day has come because the amazing team at Patchwork Threads have turned the Love Triangle Quilt into a Tee and I could not be more thrilled. This was really a "pinch me" moment as I am such a big fan of Patchwork Threads and their Tee's.  I already own six of their other quilting and sewing inspired ones and I can not wait for my Tee's to arrive to wear. The Vintage Navy colour is stunning against the bright colours of the letters and the Tri Blend fabric is so soft and comfy to wear.
