Tilda Harvest Blog Hop

I have long been a fan of Tilda fabrics but earlier this year when I first got my hands on "Harvest" I knew this collection was next level, hands down my favourite Tilda collection to date.  Big call right - but just look at these divine fabrics and the colours of the prints are just amazing!!

Harvest launches in stores here in Australia on August 1st (through 2 Green Zebras) and you bet you will want to add these prints to your stash without question.

When my fabrics arrived I had been thinking a lot about my Nanna whom had been very influential on me with my love for sewing, baking and crafting.  I spent hours with here when I was a young child making things, learning how to crochet, bake and sew.  Even though she has long passed, she has been a main driver for my own Quilting and sewing today.

I am lucky to have many of the Needle turn and Cross Stitch Table cloths that she had made herself and these have always held a real special place in my heart.  This really got me thinking as to how I could represent and honour her love for all things handmade into a modern interpretation of how I love to Quilt.

I pulled out the Table cloths, some graph paper and my coloured pencils and set about recreating the designs of the cross stitch patterns onto paper thinking about how could I make these into a quilt.  Then it was like Nan whispered in my ear and I immediately realised how I could combine my love for Applique and Quilting to design with these stunning fabrics.

The colours and prints in this Harvest collection just make me sing - such pretty pinks against these teals and greens.  And while I have never been much of an orange lover - these fabrics could certainly change my mind.

So I created this Applique Cross-Stitch quilt - using the shades from the prints to create the different colours of the petals and the leaves.  The background fabric - Metallic Oyster Essex Linen is also unbelievably magical.

Having made this larger lap Size Quilt - I quickly wanted to make more in different sizes and worked then on sizing up a smaller version that would not be to difficult to Applique while smaller in size.  Once I worked out what size would still work - I set about making a Mini or Wall Hanging Size version of this pattern.  This time I pulled the Oranges, Creams and Teals from Harvest to create this project.

And not being able to stop there, I went back to the Table cloths and drawings and decided that I wanted to make Pillows to co-ordinate.

I have called the Quilt - Viv's Rose - after my Nanna and hope that this would have made her proud and as a tribute to how much a part of my journey now as an adult she still is.

The pattern is available in my store here - Viv's Rose as a PDF download or wholesale through Creative Abundance or in the US at Checker Distributors.  Or ask for it at your local Quilt store

The pattern includes the Lap Quilt, Wall Hanging and 2 Pillow options with Layout Guides.  Also Scan and Cut Friendly or you can make your Own Templates.  Template sets are also available that Include the Applique Templates and Trim Tool for both sizes.

Tilda Harvest - well it truly is a stunning collection with saturated colours and the sweetest prints.  If you have been a long time Tilda fan or this is the first time you have seen it - you will just adore it.

The Quilting Company - Foundation Paper Piecing Made Easy

Back in May this year when I travelled to the U.S for Spring Quilt Market in St Louis  - also on my agenda was heading to Denver to The Quilting Company filming set. Well what an experience - it was a constant feeling or excited nervousness at my first filming session.

Leading on from my Book - Weekend Quilting - The Quilting Company wanted to expand on Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) and designing a course suitable for beginners of this technique.   Foundation Paper Piecing can be a tricky skill to learn.  This method is great when you are wanting precise and accurate points in your quilting achieved by sewing to a "Paper Foundation".

The course guides you through the important tools you will need for this technique and how they are used.  The process behind FPP and how to move through each step to make your blocks for the class project.  Along with all my best tips and tricks for this method of sewing and how easily you can master this technique.

There are 2 projects - The Sparkles Quilt and the Butterfly Release Quilt.  These projects help to grow your skills or try just one or the other.

Along the way there are ways to change up your blocks to create different looks to your quilt and we go through how to baste, machine quilt and bind your projects.

The course guides you step by step through the process to give you the confidence to try this technique for yourself.  Once you have mastered this technique you will love creating these Quilts for yourself.

So if you would like to join me for this course -

Love Letters Quilt - Made with Alice Caroline Exclusive Liberty

I am a B-I-G Liberty fan - that is no secret!  So when Alice Caroline put out an Exclusive Collection - this was just a natural addition to my collection and resistance - futile.

Alice Caroline has the most beautiful stocked stop with Liberty fabrics that just sing.  I was so excited when this curated Collection by Alice was introduced as so many of my favourite prints were re-coloured and given that Alice Caroline magical touch.

I knew immediately that I was going to re-make my Love Letters Quilt and feature that amazing Margaret Annie X - Turquoise and Pink for the main heart and border for this quilt.

Who can resist a "snippy corner".  I just love the colours in the prints and who well they all play together.  These Classics prints in new colour ways - and that Mint Betsy - just exquisite.

For the Background White fabric I also used Liberty Tana Lawn and it really helps the project all tie in with such a draped feel to the quilt.  This quilt was just perfect to showcase these florals and how sweet they all work in together.

Star Filled Skies Pillow Tutorial - Weekend Quilting Bonus Project!

In my book - Weekend Quilting (available here) one of the projects is a Lap Quilt called - Star Filled Skies.  When I created this design, due to the number of colours and prints I used, there were some blocks left over that were not used in making the quilt.  I decided after some discussion with my Editor that I wanted to keep the pattern written with the extra blocks otherwise the cutting instructions would have become fiddly and more complicated.  I also admit that I like a few extra blocks to play with the colours and placement of patterns to achieve the perfect layout.

So after keeping the extra blocks it was decided that I thought it would be great to use them to make a Pillow from these leftover blocks to have a Quilt and Pillow set.  Below is a Tutorial for how to construct the Pillow.  You will need a copy of Weekend Quilting to make the Star blocks (or have them leftover from your Quilt).

Star Filled Skies Pillow
16.5in x 16.5in

Requirements
Leftover blocks from Star Filled Skies
(1 medium and 4 small stars)
1/4 yd Background Fabric
1/4 yd Binding fabric
Cotton Thread
20in x 20in Square Batting
1/2 yd Backing Fabric
18in Zip
18in Cushion insert
(I always upsize my insert by one size from the finished
size of the pillow for a "plump" looking Pillow)

Cutting Instructions

From your Background fabric cut:
4 - 3.5in x 6.5in pieces for the pillow top
2 - 2.5in x 12.5in pieces (left and right borders)
2 - 2.5in x 16.5in pieces (top and bottom borders)

From your Backing fabric cut:
1 - 4.75in x 16.5in piece for backing top
1 - 14.25in x 16.5in piece for backing bottom

From your Binding fabric cut:
2 - 2.5in strips x WOF (width of fabric)

Step 1 - Layout your spare blocks as above and place the background pieces as shown around the stars.

Step 2 - sew a background piece to either side of your centre star and in-between your top and bottom smaller stars.  Press your seams open.

Step 3 - Sew each of the rows together, pressing seams open.  This block now measures 12.5in x 12.5in

Step 4 - to each of the sides sew the left and right border pieces.  Press seams open.

Step 5 - sew the top and bottom border pieces to your pillow top.  Press seams open.  Your finished Pillow top will now measure 16.5in x 16.5in.

Step 6 - Take your pillow top and baste to your Batting.  Quilt however you choose.  I decided to machine quilt mine using the outside straight lines of the stars to quilt along side.  You could even hand quilt your Pillow top.  Trim your excess batting.

Zipped Cushion Back and Binding - Follow the instructions outlined in Weekend Quilting using the Chapter - Putting it All Together to show you how to make the zipped Pillow back and how to add binding to your Pillow.
