Smitten Quilt - My English Paper Piecing Adventure. Part 2

Well and truly Smitten! I am just loving this quilt and deciding each and every piece that will make up each hexagon.  It took me quite a long time to decide whether I was going to Machine piece or English Paper Piece this project and I am glad I decided on EPP.

To hand sew my shapes I like to use Aurifil #2021 in 50wt.  This is nice and fine and perfect to make the tiny stitches.  I also love to baste my Hexagons with a Sue Daley Glue Pen.

There are now full kits available from Sue Daley Designs for the Smitten Quilt with all the pre-cut papers and acrylic templates you will need to make each of the Hexagons if you are planning on sewing yours also using the English Paper Piecing method.

If you have been thinking of starting a Smitten Quilt - do it!  You will love it no matter whether you sew it on the machine or by hand.  If you have any questions as well as to how mine has been sewn - ask away.

  1. I am a huge fan of EPP, and yours looks so perfect! How do you manage to make the stitches so invisible? Do you use a special weight thread? Ali @ arabesque-scissors.com

    1. Hi Alison, Thanks for your kind words. I use Aurifil 50wt thread for hand sewing my hexagons. This thread is nice and fine and helps to disappear into the fabric. I use either #2021 when I need white or #4060 which is variegated grey/white which works fabulously with darker threads. Hope that helps.

  2. Your Smitten Quilt will be beautiful! I love having some EPP on the go.

Jemima are you aware of any Australian online fabric stores which stock Cloud 9 organic fabrics? I've found Clair's Fabrics and Little Crafty Shop. Do you know of any others?

    1. Hi Karen, no sorry I don't know of any Aussie stores that carry Cloud 9 fabrics. I haven't used these fabrics so I am not sure. Amitie Textiles may have some. You could try them.

  3. Jemima I know I am a few years late on the EPP projects but...better late than never. I love this block and would love to make a quilt like this. Could you please tell me where or how I can purchase the pattern pieces? I have search for the package you speak of and it is obviously no longer available. If you can give me the size and name of the pieces I need to purchase I'll go that route. Please contact me ASAP with any information you have on where I can get the templates. Thank you so much. Regina
